onto a pick-up truck in the houston area, killing the driver. no fatalities but plenty of clean-up this morning in oklahoma city following this massive pile-up. 21 cars and tractor-trailers crashed, slipping on roads coated with freezing rain. not just wind and ice, but snow is pounding parts of the west. in northern california, near lake tahoe, an avalanche buried and killed a snowboarder. in reno, slush is making a mess of streets. and poor visibility is a problem. all the roads across the rockies. near salt lake city -- >> what happened? >> i slid off. >> reporter: the department of transportation sl putting up flashing signs to help warn travelers. when temperatures dropped and snow started falling, the cars started sliding. and this semi crashed off i-80. outside of denver, snowplows are trying to clear things up. here you see the snow getting worse, blowing across the road from the hillside below. lousy for drivers, but good times for sleigh riders and snowboarders. and take a look at these photos from northern arizona, low visibility on the roads near flagstaff. tonight,

with severe weather. tornado watches you can see. look at this. i-10 right along the gulf coast, houston to new orleans. and this is just really the beginning of it. we're looking at incredibly severe weather. tornado watches and tornado warnings. tornado warnings meaning these storms have produced rotation and have been detected. you can see right there. so right now it's eastern texas moving into louisiana. kind of to give you a perspective, south of i-20 here is tyler, texas. here's shreveport, louisiana. all of these moving northeast and this is just the beginning of really what could be an inundation of severe weather today and really a rash of tornadoes which is really quite rare for christmas day. so here is a look from houston to new orleans the beginning of the day from now through kind of early afternoon and as we head toward afternoon and into evening, atlanta, birmingham, so dangerous tornadoes, winds 60 to 80 miles per hour, straight line winds could be a factor as well. as well as damaging hail. so you kind of get the perspective and the gravity of this. that is the severe

in houston was killed. they are blocking the road way. the midwest is dealing with heavy snow and ice. remnants of that storm being blamed for a car pileup that happened just before 3:00 this morning as freezing rain fell overnight. 21 cars were involved in that crash. 12 people were hurt. none of them appear to be serious. >> now your insta-weather plus forecast with tony pann. >> the store may visit us tomorrow. it was the same system i was talking about. you have called their diving down into the plains states and warm air from the southeast. that is where you get the big storm. this one is pretty good. it has snow on the backside. including tornados. some tornadoes coming out of louisiana and eventually into alabama as well. and then portions of arkansas back into oklahoma and texas. this is ongoing in our direction. this will be a rain even for us. there is one part of the day we have to watch, temperatures may start out below freezing. while the rain is coming in, there might be some icy patches. it is the temperatures that will be the thing we are watching number one, the cloud

and a bystander were shot and killed in suburban houston this morning. it began when the officer made a traffic stop. the suspect drove away - and later began shooting from a parking lot. police say the man shot and killed a bystander, then fired at the officer who was killed. the suspect was also shot - and is in critical condition. police say they have no idea why he opened fire. >> catherine: a 17-year-old boy in massachusetts will spend christmas in jail - after threatening to shoot up his school. he says it was only a joke when he told police about his plan to target his high school his attorney says the school has had 'real' threats in the past - and it's not fair to single out her client. he'll spend at least the next 3 days in jail. >> also in texas.six children were hurt when a gasoline can exploded in a backyard today. the children in the dallas area had been sprinkling gasoline on a fire pit in the town of mckinney. the gasoline can blew up, burning the children. some were seriously injured. police say adults were inside the house when it happened. a man who had been working on a cel

george h-w bush is spending his christmas in a houston hospital. this is despite his doctors' hopes last week that he would be released by today. his doctors have not set a discharge date because they want to make sure he continues to build up his energy. been hospitalized for about a month after getting bronchitis. nelson mandela also remains hospitalized today. president is said to be looking much better and is in good spirits. mandela has been in the hospital since december eighth. recovering from a lung infection and the removal of gall stones. south african president wife and family at his bedside today to wish him a merry christmas. ♪ [ female announcer ] no more paper coupons. no more paper lists.
